dougphotoDoug Jayne

Hailing from St. Croix, USVI, Doug has a wide experience as an ocean sailor and an experienced seaman on many types of boats, including multihulls, power and sailing catamarans, and trimarans. He and his family sailed extensively thru out the Caribbean, Bahamas, South America and the North Atlantic Seaboard.

He has been sailing, building and repairing boats for over 35 years. He started his boat building career in the 1960's. Owning his first boat yard at 20 in Christiansted St. Croix; he built and repaired wooden boats including the first 50' USCG certified day sail catamaran, a Wharam design, called the Virgin Islander. Over the years he worked at Chandlers Marine(now St Croix Marine); Quissett Harbor Boat Yard; and Ted Turner's Yard in Hilton Head, SC.

His family settled in Mathews County Virginia where he owned and operated a sawmill. Doug has been involved with wood as an engineering material over the years making fine furniture, cabinet making and combining the wood with epoxy and laminates to build boats.

Eventually landing in Charleston SC he built the 1st of Jim Brown and John Marples Searunner 50' day sail Catamarans. Of the 25 day sail Searunner catamarans, Doug has built more Searunner 50's than anyone else. He delivered them to where they operate today in Puerto Rico, St Thomas and St John, USVI.

Moving his family back to the Caribbean; they operated the sailing concession at a Five Star Resort on their two 49 passenger catamarans, Adventurer and Calypso for 8 years. They sold the business and have moved back to Virginia where Doug has gotten back into building boats, his passion.
